About Helena Swanwick

[dropcap]H[/dropcap]elena (Nellie) Swanwick (1865 – 1939) was a naturalist, a botanist and a gardener, a prolific writer and journalist and a dedicated campaigner for women’s suffrage, socialism and  peace. Born Helena Sickert in Munich to a Danish father and English mother she was the second of six children. The eldest was the painter Walter Sickert. The family moved to England in 1869, first to Bedford, then quickly to Notting Hill London.
She grew up in London and lived there with her family until 1888 when she married university professor Frederick Swanwick and moved to Manchester.
